| Hirsutism |
| Hirsutism (or hirsutes) is the medical term for increased hair growth in women and refers to a male pattern of hair, such as in moustache and beard areas, on the chest or an extension of pubic hair on to the abdomen and thighs. Hirsutism is very common and commonly accepted to be of genetic in origin. Some women with hirsutism have increased amounts of male hormone (eg. testosterone). However, most have normal levels but their hair follicles are more sensitive than normal to the male hormone and their hair grows more quickly and thicker in response to it. |
