The female sex hormone, estrogen, promotes the growth of hair on the scalp while limiting hair growth elsewhere on the body. Estrogen is also blocking the effects of testosterone and its derivative, DHT.

As the level of estrogen drops by menopause, so also drops the positive effects of the hormone, with the result that some women experience hair thinning and hair loss following menopause.
