Stress and hair loss

Stress causes many types of illnesses, and hair loss is no exception. Even though poorly understood, it is commonly accepted that emotional upset and severe mood swings may affect the health of hair as well as the rest of the body.

Hair loss caused by sudden or severe stress is in medical terms called Telogen Effluvium, which causes a significant increase in the shedding of the hair.

Hair loss due to stress is caused when a stressor causes an extra amount of hair to go into the loss-phase. The stressor can be physical, such as severe illness, or psychological, such as severe depression. Stress-induced hair loss is associated with increased hair shedding, sometimes as much as 3-500 hairs per day, as compared with normal shedding of 50-100 hairs per day. Hair loss caused by stress is reversible with regrowth usually starting within a year or so after hair shedding slows. In fact, if hair does not regrow, the hair loss was probably not entirely caused by stress.

It is our recommendation that Bioscal® or Bioscalin® is used to remove obstacles to natural, healthy hair growth, to prepare and stimulate the scalp for new hair growth and to optimize the growth conditions for the new hair. However, the reasons for the excessive stress should be resolved before significant improvements can be expected.
