Teenage hair loss

Teenage hair loss can happen for many reasons.

Even though rare, alopecia areata may affect teens. It is noticed when circular bald spots, one or two inches in diameter, suddenly occur. Teenagers as early as fifteen years old may be affected.

Tinea capitis, or scalp ring worm, is another reason why some teenagers experience hair loss. This condition is caused by a fungus that can cause hair to be lost in patches, hair to be broken, and the scalp to be affected. Ring worm is contagious and it is critical that it is treated immediately upon discovery.

Traction alopecia is caused by extreme hair care treatment, such as excessive hair drying, curling or other heat treatments, bleach treatments, teasing, tight hairstyles, and pulling of hair, such as pony tails. Discontinuation of the cause will repeal this hair loss.

Androgenic alopecia also occurs in teenagers, in some cases as early as puberty.

It is our recommendation that Bioscal® or Bioscalin® is used to remove obstacles to natural, healthy hair growth, to prepare and stimulate the scalp for new hair growth and to optimize the growth conditions for the new hair. However, underlying medical disorders, such as ring worm, should be treated by medical practitioners.
